Specialized assignments and trainings aren't the only way to grow within the Oswego Police Department.  We offer regular promotional examinations to provide our officers with even greater opportunity for growth and career development.

Currently, the Oswego Police Department offers the following promotional opportunities:

  • Investigator ($66,392 - $104,399)

  • Sergeant ($69,943 - $112,045)

  • Lieutenant ($77.797 - $122,342)

  • Captain ($85,462 - $134,111)

Oswego Police Department Female Officers

Eligibility Requirements

  • Candidates must be 19-35 years old on or before the civil service examination date to be eligible for admission to the written test, with exceptions for military personnel over the age of 35.

  • Candidates must have a high school diploma or equivalency at time of application.

  • Candidates must possess a valid New York State Driver's License at time of appointment.

  • Candidates must be a legal resident of New York State for a minimum of 1 month prior to the date of the examination. Residency in Oswego County  or contiguous county (Cayuga, Onondaga, Madison, Oneida, Lewis, and Jefferson) must be established  at the time of appointment and maintained throughout employment.

Salary & Benefits

At the Oswego Police Department, we believe in putting you first. We have taken great measures to provide our officers with an excellent salary and benefit package that supports their mental and physical well-being. We believe that by putting you first, our service to the community is only strengthened.

Salary

  • The starting salary for an Oswego City Police Officer Recruit is $64, 353.

  • Upon completion of your first year, your salary increases to $68,540

  • Police officers receive an annual increase in their salary, and can earn up to $98,058 as a Police Officer.

  • NYS Certified Police Officers who lateral transfer receive a $15,000 sign on bonus and Phase I candidates who are hired receive a $7,500 sign on bonus.

  • Candidates who are proficient in a foreign language are also eligible for enhanced incentives..

Schedule

  • Police Officers assigned to the patrol division work 12-hour shifts, working an average of 16 days a month with every other Friday, Saturday, and Sunday off.

Time Off

  • Police officers earn 24 hours of personal leave, 96 hours of sick leave, 80-160 hours of vacation time, 96 hours of shift overage time, and 13 paid holidays annually. That equates to up to 36 days (excluding sick time) you can use annually. That's up to 12 weeks per year.

  • Police Officers also have the ability to earn compensatory time, of which allows you to earn additional time off when you work overtime.

  • To promote the mental and physical wellness of our officers, we also offer a wellness program that allows our police officers to earn extra time off annually or a financial incentive to partake in wellness and physical fitness activities.

Lateral Transfer Opportunities

Lateral transfer candidates interested in transferring to the Oswego Police Department, must  meet the following requirements:

  • Must currently be employed full-time as a Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff in New York State and successfully completed the probationary period with your current agency.

  • Must have been hired from a NYS Civil Service Eligibility List.

  • Must have successfully completed a NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Basic Police Officer Academy.

  • Must have successfully completed the probationary period with current agency

 

Lateral transfers will be credited with 1 year of service with the Oswego Police Department for each year of service with your current agency, up to a maximum of 10 years of service and salary and vacation will reflect such.

Lateral transfers are also currently eligible for a $15,000 hiring bonus!

Physical Agility Workshops

We're not only committed to helping our officers succeed throughout their careers, but we're also committed to helping our applicants succeed as well. We understand that preparation for the physical agility examination is critical to your success moving forward in our application process and due to such, we offer regular physical agility workshops led by our trained instructors to help you prepare.  Our physical agility workshops aim to help you develop proper form, improve your overall endurance and strength, and to overall help you prepare for the requirements of the physical agility examination. Attendance is completely voluntary and you must register to be able to attend.
